09/23/2011 History was made by the Keyano College Huskies women’s soccer team.

Competing in their 10th Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season, the Huskies have only scored three goals in a game twice before.  They have never scored past that number.

A 3-1 win over the visiting Kings University College Eagles at Corless Field today makes a third time. What is extra special though, is that all three were recorded by third-year midfield Jamie Hannigan, giving her the Huskies second ever hat trick!  The first was recorded by former Husky Dena Yaghi a few years ago against the same Eagles.

Coming off back-to-back losses to open the 2011 ACAC regular season on the road, a 5-0 to the No. 1 ranked in the nation NAIT Ooks and 4-0 to the Grant MacEwan University Griffins, the Huskies took to Corless Field today a different team...pressing from the opening whistle.

Hannigan scored her first goal two minutes into the game with a low sweeping kick while prone on the ground.  Huskies’ goalie Rebecca Rice did not have her first real challenge until 5:30 into the half.

The Huskies continued to play mainly on the right side of the field for majority of the first half, prompting Huskies coach Iaz Diaz to shout out the command: “Girls….can we please use the other side of the field also as we are going to wear out the grass!”

A few minutes later, Huskies defender April Weigelt took heed and lofted a ball from midfield to a streaking Hannigan on the left side. Hannigan went in for her second goal at the 44th minute.

Hannigan tipped in No. 3, six minutes into the second half following up on a Kennedy Brass shot and rebound which had been led by a brilliant set up from Tamara Wilson.

Eagles lone goal came off the foot of Sherry Rosychuk at the 44th minute.

Hannigan was named Huskies Game MVP with Kelly Eggink getting the Eagles nod.

Huskies are now 1-2 with 3 goals for and 10 against.

The two teams return to the pitch tomorrow Saturday Sept 24 at 2 p.m.
