Huskies Hire Women's Volleyball Coach PDF Print E-mail

May 19, 2010 (Fort McMurray, AB): Keyano College Athletics is pleased to announce that Sean Seywright of Winnipeg, Manitoba has been hired to coach the Huskies women’s volleyball team.

Seywright, 31, replaces third-year coach Melissa Laluk who recently relocated to Fernie, B.C.

Seywright brings 15 years of coaching experience to the Huskies women’s team. The Huskies finished the 2009-10 season with a 7th place finish at the ACAC Championships.

Seywright is excited about the move west.

“Keyano offered a great athletic program...from its Athletic Director, directors and coaches, to its upcoming talent,” said Seywright, who coached Winnipeg’s Kelvin High School Clippers women’s volleyball to three-consecutive Winnipeg School Division One titles, including an unblemished record of 39-0 in league play from 1997-1999

“The chance to become part of (Huskies Volleyball) and be part of such an up-and-coming program was too good to pass up. I am hoping that in the near future we can build on the depth of the team and meet last year’s mark and push to a top five.

“Long-term I would like to help this program grow to a level where they podium every year and start looking at nationals as a serious option.”

Seywright takes his volleyball seriously and is totally immersed in his drive and dedication.

He attends coaching development seminars during the summer at the University of Washington and is a fully certified NCCP Level III coach.

He is also head coach and director of the prestigious Blazer Volleyball Club in Winnipeg.

During his tenure as head coach with the Big Sand Volleyball Club, he coached more than 10 teams (under-16 and under-18) during a six-year stretch.

Seywright coached teams have won several provincial championships and attended national championships. He has also assisted more than 50 athletes in their goal to secure post-secondary volleyball scholarships, be it in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport or National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I or II schools.

His impressive resume includes the fact that he has also coached Team Manitoba.

Of his own coaching philosophy, he states that his goal is: “To create a positive environment where the team can learn and develop as athletes both on and off court and to help teach positive life skills through sport. To maintain those goals through adversity and in the search of personal and team success.”

Asked what is most memorable moment as a volleyball coach is to date, Seywright responded:  “The first was coaching 16-under club with Big Sand. That year our team went 83-11 for the year, won provincials without losing a set and only lost one game at nationals. It was the closest to perfection I have come with a group of athletes.”

“The second was coaching the third 18-under team in my BVC club. When we finished the season, I felt as though in the four or five years we had spent working together, the athletes and I had really connected. I felt that I had made an impact on their life that went far beyond the volleyball arena. I know all of the young women on that team are destined for great things in life and to be part of that is special.”

After the most successful season in several years for the Keyano Huskies women's volleyball season, head coach Melissa Laluk is stepping aside.

Laluk, the Alberta Sport Development Centre co-ordinator and women's head volleyball coach, is leaving at the end of the month for a "lifestyle change" in Fernie B.C. She's looking at finding self-employment in the field of exercise, wellness and sport development.

"I'm taking risks, I guess, in a way," Laluk said.

Last year, the Huskies were 7-13 in the ACAC regular season, winning a post-season playoff qualification weekend at SAIT 2-0 before having a 1-2 run at provincials. In her third year with the team, Laluk's last season was her most successful.

"With the Huskies, I leave a program that I think is on the right path for continual and growing success<" she said. "I've definitely been happy with my experience here and I think it's been positive for me and the people I've had interactions with."

This season was the Huskies first appearance in the ACAC provincials in almost a decade.

Before the Huskies, Laluk had spent her collegiate playing years with the University of Alberta Pandas and the Red Deer Queens of the ACAC. Coaching volleyball always seemed to be in the cards for Laluk.

"I think volleyball as a career kind of surprised me," she said. "As an opportunity, I didn’t necessarily expect it to happen, and when it did it definitely changed my path forever. I couldn't be more grateful for having the opportunity."

Next year, and in future years the Huskies look to build on their success from this year.

"I think there's a solid group of returners and they will carry forward," Laluk said. "I think every year; they've built up a little more desire. Those girls will carry that desire and whoever new that comes into the program will get to contribute to that and hopefully they can keep making steps."

Huskies athletic director Wade Kolmel indicated he is close to making the decision on hiring the new person to replace Laluk and a decision could be made soon.

Denney off to CCAA Championship PDF Print E-mail
March 3, 2010: The Keyano College Huskies men’s and women’s volleyball programs have provided a stepping stone for several athletes.

The 2008-2009 Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) Male Player of the Year Alwyn Piche now wears the university uniform of the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Two other former Huskies, Robyn Denney and Keegan Kuhr (see Men's Volleyball News) are now off to the CCAA women’s and men’s volleyball championships respectively.

Robyn Denney is heading east to Gatineau, Quebec for the CCAA women’s championships March 12-14 with the Red Deer College Queens. The Queens captured the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) banner recently with a 25-17, 25-11, 25-21 decision against Edmonton’s Grant MacEwan Griffins.

Denney, a graduate of Westwood Community High School Trojans program, is not only a champion on the court but off of it as well.

“This year at college has been great, my GPA was 3.9,” said Denney, who’s younger sister Desiree was a first-year libero for the Keyano Huskies. “Some of the highlights were having a 19-1 record this year, winning provincials and now going to nationals.”

Denney, who also has an older sister Nicole who played high school volleyball for the Trojans, realized the shift south to Red Deer for 2009-2010 would mean less playing time.

“This year I didn’t get to play all that much. I was a rookie on the team and had to wait my turn behind three really great left side players. I knew that coming in,” stated the 5-foot-9 Denney. “Next year I’ll have a lot more playing time. I have learned a lot playing with my team mates, especially Katie Graves who was All Canadian last year as well as Jessica Clutton who is All Canadian this year.”

Of her first trip to nationals, Denney replied: “Going to nationals, wow, it’s an amazing feeling. I can’t even explain how happy I am."

Denney also credits the Huskies volleyball program for “improving her game.”

“Coming out of high school I was not the strongest player,” admits Denney. “I was middle in high school and switched to left side in my first year of college. Playing for Melissa (Laluk) really improved my defence as well as my attacking. She pretty much worked on my entire game. Had I not played for Keyano...I would not have had the guts to try out for (Red Deer College) let alone make it through tryouts.”
