Huskies in Red Deer PDF Print E-mail
The Huskies left for the Wild Rose Classic in Red Deer on Thursday morning. We stayed the in Edmonton on Thursday night after having a practice with the University of Alberta Pandas. The Huskies were very excited and nervous about practicing with the Pandas but once practice got going the girls really pushed themselves to a higher performance. Our first match in Red Deer was against the host, the RDC Queens. The Huskies had good rallies but did not finish on top. Throughout the weekend the Huskies seemed to struggle with focus but ended up in Third in Pool A, after defeating NAIT. The Huskies were matched up to play the RDC Queens Alumni as a qualifier round, and the Alumni showed their strengths through aggressive but smart play. The Huskies ended the weekend with a battle against Douglas College, losing in three. We have left the weekend with a new focus on performance development.

Huskies WVB played against Lakeland College and King’s University College. King’s split their team into two small squads to allow their new athletes to get some playing time. Our goal for the weekend was to focus on performance. We focused our efforts to improving our blocking, establishing our middles and running our new offensive game plan. The Huskies did a good job on staying focused on performance and it allowed them to play through errors and poor calls without being mentally or emotionally effected. The Huskies went to 5 sets with King’s 1 on Friday night at 7pm winning in the 5th. Our next match was on Saturday morning at 10am against King’s 2. That match also went to 5 sets, with the Huskies winning 20-18 in the fifth. We had a short 3 hour break before our next match against Lakeland College. The Huskies lost in four, winning only the 2nd set. The tournament ended up in the three way tie for 1st, and the decision was made on sets won, and then points. Because of our two 5 set matches the Huskies were placed in Third and scheduled to play Sunday morning at 8:30am against King’s 2. The Huskies were more awake and ready to play on Sunday morning and quickly put the King’s 2 team away in three sets. Overall the weekend was a success both in terms of performance but also in terms of team building. The Huskies got to know each other better, resolved some issues, and learnt that we have our strengths now and that we have areas to grow and improve before the league play starts on October 23rd.

Women's Volleyball 2009-10 Season Outlook PDF Print E-mail

Huskies women’s volleyball will look to improve on their 1-19 record from last season. They’re motivated and, according to head coach Melissa Laluk, have been working together in the off-season.

“Over the summer, there were a lot of girls still in town,” Laluk said. “They had motivation to train with each other and stuff, so they were keeping up their fitness and preparing for this year. I think a lot of the returning group have come in with a positive, unified outlook. The girls that had that (playoff) qualifying match against SAIT last year still feel that loss, and how close they were.”
