The ascension of the Women's Basketball Huskies in the ranks of the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC) carries with it an expectation that the torch will be passed from one group to another to maintain the high standard that came before them.
In Kayla Lutterodt's situation, she's doing exactly that, as a key veteran member of the team in the past two seasons.
Lutterodt had a bench role as part of a Huskies team that earned a pair of ACAC Silver Medals in competition during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. Coming out of the COVID-cancelled season and into the shortened 2021-22 season, the Huskies looked to Lutterodt to play a bigger role and she did.
A breakout season saw her average 6.1 points per game, starting seven of the team's 16 games. As well, her 62 rebounds were third on the team, ranking second in offensive rebounds and fourth in defensive rebounds.
She'd also added 23 assists, 13 steals, and three blocks as part of her surging season as the Huskies went 12-4 to finish second in the ACAC North Division, their fourth-straight season of finishing first or second the division, and fifth-straight season placing in the top three.
Following another departure of leading players in advance of the 2022-23 season, Lutterodt has increased her role with the team, starting all 18 games and averaging 9.1 points per game. That's translated to 163 points, a new career-high for points in a single season, along with 89 rebounds, another career-high for a seasonal total.
With Lutterodt in the lineup and on her game, the Huskies are once again battling for the second spot in the division, and poised to contend in the ACAC Women's Basketball Championships scene once again.
