Besic, Sreckovic named All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week
Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Basketball student-athlete Maja Besic (Pancevo, Serbia) and Men's Volleyball student-athlete Nikola Sreckovic (Kragujevac, Serbia) have been recognized as the All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 12, 2025.
Both Besic and Sreckovic played key roles for their respective sides as their teams completed weekend sweeps against the Concordia Thunder to open the second half of action inthe Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).
Friday, the Huskies claimed a 66-59 win on the strength of Besic’s fourth double-double of the season. In 29 minutes of action, the fifth-year forward from Pancevo, Serbia scored 20 points, adding 15 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and three blocks.
In a key third quarter, Besic scored 10 of the Huskies’ 19 points as they fended off a comeback attempt by the Thunder. She also collected seven of her 15 rebounds in the opening quarter to set the tone for the rest of the match.
“Not having her in Montana really shows how much she impacts our team in a positive way,” Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance said. “She doesn’t do anything flashy; her numbers are always straight line. She’s 20 [points] and 15 [rebounds] or 13 and 10 and that common factor for us. Without her, we’re a different team but with her, I think we’re so much better.”
Saturday, Besic delivered again, scoring 10 points while adding nine rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks in a 65-49 win. Besic’s contributions were key in the second and third quarters as she scored eight of the Huskies’ 31 points in those two quarters to set them on the path to victory.
In her fifth year of eligibility, Besic is averaging 12.5 points per game, which would be a new career-high total for her if she keeps up the pace to the end of the regular season. Her 11.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game would are also bests for her post-secondary career with the Huskies.
Across two weekend three-set wins in Edmonton, Sreckovic collected 47 assists, four digs, two blocks, and one kill. He recorded 27 assists in Friday's win and added 20 more Saturday afternoon. He also collected a pair of digs and single block in each match.
“Nikola’s been with us for a couple years now. He’s just a true pro. He’s always ready to go when we need him. He’s a pretty impressive setter. He serves well, he runs the offence great and does everything that we need him to do.
"I was really happy to get him out there for a couple games this weekend."
The fifth-year setter from Kragujevac, Serbia has appeared in five games this season, accumulating 117 assists, nine kills, eight digs, and three blocks for the first-place Huskies. Studying Business Administration - Human Resources, Sreckovic is one of the conference's top setters all-time, having recorded 1,896 for his post-secondary career.
This weekend's efforts moved him past Huskies alumni Devin Varga for eighth place all-time in conference assists.
Sreckovic and the Huskies host the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves this coming weekend at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre. First serve Friday is at 6:00pm followed by a 1:00pm first serve Saturday.
