Taller, Arellano named All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week
Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Soccer student-athlete Ayla Taller (Edmonton, Alta.) and Men's Soccer student-athlete Hafid Arellano (Lima, Peru) have been recognized as the All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 29, 2024.
The pair played key roles for the Huskies on the pitch this past weekend against the NAIT Ooks. Taller scored her sixth goal of the season Saturday while Arellano contributed a goal and an assist in his team’s games.
“With Ayla, there’s just no quit,” Head Coach Tiffany Fontaine said. “She’s been contributing to stats, both with assists, with goals, with turnovers, we can rely on her defensively.
“She’s a handful for any team. I’m very proud of her work rate and her progress this season.”
Taller’s goal came in the 39th minute of Saturday’s 2-2 draw, helping kick-start the Huskies’ offence. Taller delivered the header off a Harleen Singh corner kick near the close of the first half.
On the Men’s side of the ball, Arellano scored the Huskies’ lone goal Saturday off a penalty kick. Sunday, he assisted on the first goal of Zaiden Cook’s ACAC career with a free kick.
Head Coach Niels Slotboom noted that Arellano wasn’t just stepping up on the scoresheet, but in all areas for their squad.
“Overall, some really good leadership,” Slotboom said. “He’s really trying to step up and take on that role. He’s had some issues with emotions before and getting into the physical side of the game, but that’s something that he’s really working on, which makes him an even bigger threat.
“He’s doing the right things instead of sometimes getting caught up in the other side. Leadership is massive for him and it’s massive for our group.”
The Soccer Huskies return to the home pitch on Sunday, October 6 to host the Portage College Voyageurs in their final home games of the regular season. Kick-offs are scheduled for 12:00pm for the Women and 2:00pm for the Men. The game also features a senior day celebration before each game of the respective teams.
