Wijnbergen, Lungu named All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week
Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Soccer student-athlete Anke Wijnbergen (Leeuwarden, Netherlands) and Men's Soccer student-athlete Michael Lungu (Edmonton, Alta.) have been recognized as the All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 13, 2024.
The pair played key roles in victories for their teams with Lungu helping his side to a weekend sweep and Wijnbergen contributing to a weekend split in Edmonton.
"Anke had one of her strongest weekends yet. She went down battling through every single moment on the field this weekend," Head Coach Tiffany Fontaine said. "I feel like she cleared balls out of very dangerous situations. She got in front, she controlled her back line very well.
"Communication has been top notch and she’s been a real leader on the field these last few weeks."
Wijnbergen helped shut down the attack of The King's University Eagles Saturday in a 2-0 win before scoring her team's lone goal in Sunday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Concordia Thunder.
Wijnbergen has now scored a pair of goals in 13 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Regular Season games and was part of the 2023 squad that earned a Silver Medal at the 2023 ACAC Women's Soccer Championship.
Lungu continued to excel for the Men's Soccer Huskies, scoring twice to give him three goals on the season. Saturday, he scored the Huskies' fourth goal in the 76th minute as part of a 4-0 victory. Sunday against the Thunder, he opened the scoring in the 13th minute for the game-winning goal in a 6-0 win that also secured his side a spot at the 2024 ACAC Men's Soccer Championship.
"Michael’s been good right from the beginning, but you can really see over the last few weeks here that the dots are starting to connect and he’s really starting to find his rhythm within our team," Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. "He’s a great player with lots of talent, but coming to the next level, playing against men instead of people his same age, the speed that he’s never played at before are all little things that took some time for him to adjust to.
"That’s what we’re seeing now. I’m excited to see what he’s able to do in this next weekend and at championships."
