Twin, Hurst named All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week
Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Basketball student-athlete Jaylynn Twin (Slave Lake, Alta.) and Men's Basketball student-athlete Nahshon Hurst (Markham, Ont.) have been recognized as the All In Sports Den Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 24, 2024.
Twin and Hurst were key for their respective sides as the Huskies claimed three of four wins on the home court this past weekend.
In a weekend split for the Women’s Basketball Huskies, Twin recorded 32 points, 20 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and one steal. The Men’s Basketball Huskies charged to another weekend sweep with Hurst compiling 29 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, two blocks, and one steal.
“She struggled a little bit, but when she’s calm and she’s dominant you can see that she puts up some numbers,” Women’s Basketball Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance said of Twin. “We’re still working through some stuff with her and hopefully she’ll get it by March.”
Twin recorded her third double-double of the season in Friday’s 60-35 win against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks, featuring 14 points and season-high 12 rebounds. She also added a season-high three assists in the game. Making four trips to the foul line, Twin recorded her seventh instance of perfect shooting on free throws in her ACAC career.
In a 13-point third quarter Friday, Twin powered the Huskies with six of those points.
Though they fell by a 57-43 final to the SAIT Trojans Saturday, Twin still produced 18 points to lead all players on the court, shooting 72.7 percent from the field (8-for-11).
The Slave Lake, Alta. Product is in the midst of a career year, averaging 13.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Those would be career-best numbers if they were to hold through the rest of the regular season with her seeing rises in assists, steals, and blocks per game as well.
For the Men’s Basketball Huskies, Hurst provided his seventh and eighth double-digit performances of the season in two home wins, shooting 59.1 percent (13-for-22) from the field.
“Nahshon’s been rock solid for us all year long,” Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga said. “He’s been so efficient in the paint and creating for others.
“At key times when we need a basket, he finds a way to get to the hoop.”
In Friday’s 82-66 win against the Kodiaks, Hurst tallied seven of his 15 points in the final quarter to help suppress any comeback attempt by the visitors. Saturday, he started hot with six of his 14 points in the opening quarter, second among all players on both teams.
The fifth-year guard from Markham, Ont. Currently ranks third in the entire conference for field goal percentage (59.3). Averaging 13.9 points per game, Hurst is on pace to surpass totals from his first season in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). His 4.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game would also be new career highs for the Business Management student-athlete.
The Basketball Huskies will take to the road for their final games of the first semester this coming weekend. Friday, they’ll clash with the Briercrest College Clippers in Caronport, Sask. Followed by a trip to Medicine Hat College to battle the Rattlers.
