Mestre, Vullinghs named Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week
Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women’s Soccer student-athlete Marissa Mestre (Hamilton, Ont) and Men’s Soccer student-athlete Stef Vullinghs (Vlijmen, North Brabant, The Netherlands) have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 21, 2025.
Meste scored twice and added an assist in Saturday's 3-3 draw with the Concordia Thunder. After assisting on the team's opening goal of the game, she struck twice in the second half. Her first goal gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead while her second goal helped the Huskies earn a single point in the standings, coming late in regulation.
"Marissa stepped up across the board," Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. "[She] played through some struggles, especially in the last game of the weekend, but was there, set up some plays, scored some goals.
"That’s what we need her to do and she keeps being around it. Keeps excelling in the finishing side of the game and also is working on some of the leadership style that she has. Hopefully that is going to continue with her and her goal scoring niche has always been good."
Mestre's impressive career with the Huskies has continued into 2025-26 with her scoring four goals and adding two assists. For her Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) career, Mestre has scored 37 goals and added 14 assists in 47 regular season games.
On the Men's side of the ball, Vullinghs had another sensational weekend, scoring four goals and adding an assist in a pair of weekend wins against the Thunder.
"The team as a whole is starting to come together so that’s going to open people up and give more high-quality chances across the board and Stef’s obviously good at getting on those. [Sunday] it’s three and who know what it’ll be in the weekends following this one.
Vullinghs factored into both goals in Saturday's 2-0 win, assisting on the first and scoring the second. Sunday, in a 5-1 win, he scored the second, fourth, and fifth goals of the game for the home side. In his brief ACAC career, Vullinghs has already recorded six goals and one assist in five games for the Huskies, placing himself in a tie for third among the conference's top goal scorers.
The Keyano Huskies are on the road this coming weekend for a single game. Saturday, they'll battle the Portage College Voyageurs at 2:00pm (W) and 4:15pm (M) in Lac la Biche, Alta.
