Chargers top Huskies in CCAA Bronze quarter-final
For a second-straight day, the Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team were dealt a loss within two possessions that left them wanting more.
A 70-67 defeat at the hands of the Camosun Chargers in the Bronze Medal quarter-finals confirm the Huskies’ fate to the 7th place game Sunday.
“It’s a tough game to play after emotional losses for both teams,” Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga said. “Both teams kind of settled in. It was a very competitive game and I thought our defence was fantastic in quarters two and three and then we gave up 25 points in the fourth quarter.
“It’s tough to win a game when you do that.”
A tough game from long range saw the Huskies hit just three of 19 attempted three-point shots throughout the course of the game; McMurrayite David Chijioke hitting two of those off the bench.
“With anticipating playing some more games in a number of days, we went a little bit deeper into the bench and I thought some guys gave us good minutes,” Wielenga continued. “The local kid in David Chijioke was a huge part for us tonight.
“We’ll give him another opportunity tomorrow to try and do it again for us as we close it out.”
Deandre Rowe shot 7-for-13 from the field and made good on seven of eight free throw attempts, finishing with 21 points to lead all players on the court. Evan Meyer was the only other Huskies student-athlete in double digits, scoring 10 points.
Huskies to take on Tommies for seventh place
For the second straight year, the Huskies will take on the champion from the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA), this time taking on the St. Thomas University Tommies.
The Tommies lost their Bronze quarter-final matchup against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks by an 88-83 score Thursday.
Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm PT.
