Men's Basketball Huskies edged by Seawolves in overtime at CCAA Nationals
The Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team had their hopes for a spot on the podium at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Basketball Championship deflated for a second day in a row Thursday.
In a tense battle against the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC) Champion University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves, the Huskies fell by a 76-75 result in overtime.
“It was a battle,” Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga said. “Playing after the loss last night, I still thought our guys brought great energy. we didn’t really shoot the ball very well.
“We had a couple chances to close the game and we didn’t do it. It ended up getting us in the end.”
Omeechi Williams led the Huskies with 21 points, followed closely by 20 points from Keenan Miller. Yasser Abdullahi had eight points off the bench while the trio of Efosa Omorogbe, Keenen Caribou, and Keshawn Hall each had six points.
It was a furious sprint to the finish, with the Seawolves going up 68-66 with nine seconds left before Miller made two free throws with three seconds left on the clock to extend the game.
Even the flow of overtime seemed to favour the Huskies, who led or were even with the Seawolves until the Atlantic champions went ahead for good in the final seconds.
The Huskies will now regroup to face the PACWEST Champion Capilano Blues Friday in the 7th/8th place game.
“It’s the last game of the season now so I don’t think there’s - what’s done is done,” Wielenga continued. “We’ve got to step up one more time and try to enjoy playing together and finish the season on the right note.”
Friday’s game is scheduled for a 2:00pm ET/12:00pm MT tip-off in Montreal, Que.
