Men's Basketball Huskies stars shine in opening weekend sweep
Two offensive outbursts led the way for the Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team in their opening weekend of play for the 2025-26 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season.
A 102-73 win against the Medicine Hat Rattlers featured Friday while the Huskies came out ahead in a 104-87 win against the Briercrest College Clippers in a rematch of last year’s ACAC Championship Final on Saturday at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.
“The way we moved the ball, and there’s some struggles Briercrest did a good job defensively, but we showed our explosiveness and what we could do offensively,” said Head Coach Anthony Skepple. “Back-to-back games where you score 100 points, what more can you ask for offensively. A great job by the guys.”
Shooting north of 50 percent from the field in both games, the Huskies were a hard team to contend going shot-for-shot with.
Friday, the Huskies led by 20 after one quarter and by 25 at half en route to the 29-point margin of victory.
Deandre Rowe led a quintet of Huskies in double digits with 22 points. He came one assist shy of a double-double and also added five steals to his stat line. Noted star Efosa Omorogbe made five of the Huskies’ seven three-point shots in the game as he finished with 18 points, tying teammate DJ Haynes.
“It’s amazing, especially going up against a team like Briercrest,” Haynes said following Saturday’s win. “Unfortunately, we lost to them [last March] so it feels good to get a little back.
“We did a really good job of getting out in transition and running. When that didn’t work, we did a really good job executing in the half court.”
Sammuel Nkassa had 13 points while Keenan Miller had 11 points that included five-of-six shooting from the foul line.
The strong offensive game continued into Saturday’s matchup with the Clippers. Haynes led the night with 26 points while Miller added 20.
“He’s such a great player and he really took over in that fourth quarter when the game was kind of teetering on the edge of going one way or another,” Skepple continued. “He just took over. It was great to see him take over like that and be the leader on the floor that we needed him to be.
Rowe contributed 17 points and Omorogbe starred off the bench with 14 points, including four more three pointers.
Miller and Haynes combined for 16 points in the final quarter to drive home the win for the home side. Acknowledging the two wins, Skepple noted that he was seeking more consistency in the games ahead with the Huskies’ journey just beginning.
“[Saturday] was a bit of a weird game,” he said. “The highs were really high, but the lows were really low. We’ve just got to be more consistent and not have those peaks and valleys in game.”
The Huskies will remain at home for their next two games, hosting the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves for two games at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre this Friday and Saturday. Tip-off in the women’s action is at 6:00pm Friday and 1:00pm Saturday.
