Men's Volleyball Huskies start 2025 with road weekend sweep of Thunder
The Keyano Huskies Men’s Volleyball team were all business in their opening matches of 2025, topping the Concordia Thunder twice in the provincial capital over the weekend.
“I’m happy with the way we performed,” Head Coach Keegan Kuhr said. “Not dropping a set is always a nice way to do it.
“They pushed us a little bit in the third set on Saturday. Other than that, we played to the level that we wanted to and got the result we wanted to.”
Friday’s 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-18) win was followed up by a 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-23) win Saturday that gave the Huskies a 10-1 record and their 10th-straight season of double-digit victories.
“I’m very thankful and honoured for all the guys that have come here and committed their time to performing for this program and playing under me and the college,” Kuhr said acknowledging the importance of the student-athletes in achieving the mark of consistency.
“It’s really cool on how consistent we’ve been in terms of being competitive over the past 10 years.”
This weekend’s offensive efforts were led by the likes of Rafael Parada, who accumulated 18 kills over the pair of games. Nikola Sreckovic handled setting duties with 47 assists throughout the pair of games and Athus Silva added eight blocks to his 14 kills.
“He’s someone that we’re hoping to pass the torch to next year obviously with some of the big guys on the way out,” Kuhr said of Parada. “It was nice to see Rafael perform and lead us both days.”
The Huskies also utilized their depth, turning to Kai Rosnau for 11 kills over the weekend and nine from Cameron Calhoun, who added three blocks as well.
“We’re going to go off managing our bodies and just go from there,” Kuhr said of approaching his lineup decisions for the remainder of the semester. “We’ll take it day-by-day and week-by-week and see how everyone is feeling.
“We’ve got a deep roster and good to get some different guys out there to perform.”
The Huskies return home this weekend for a pair of games against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves.
First serve on Friday is at 6:00pm for the Women’s game with the Men’s game following immediately after. Saturday’s first serve for the Women’s game is scheduled for 1:00pm at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.
