Men's Volleyball Huskies extend winning streak to three after topping Kodiaks, Trojans
Staring down a pair of the top teams in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference’s (ACAC) South Division, the Keyano Huskies Men’s Volleyball team took charge and powered themselves to a weekend sweep.
“It’s what we were training for all week,” Head Coach Keegan Kuhr said. “It’s nice when you can put a plan together.
“Obviously this is a tough road trip to go on, but guys stayed focus, and we were able to get two [wins] this weekend, which was huge.”
Friday, the Huskies handed the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks their first loss of the season in a four-set battle (32-34, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22) before extending their winning streak to three with a straight-sets win (26-24, 25-17, 25-10) against the SAIT Trojans.
The weekend wins featured the season debut of Gage Weinrauch, who served out four of the seven sets, including the service ace to cap off Saturday’s third set.
“I’m super proud of Gage,” Kuhr added. “He wanted to be part of this team and didn’t start on the roster. Came in and won us four out of seven sets with his serve; that’s massive.
“He earned himself a spot with us. I couldn’t be prouder for him. He always puts in that extra work, always continuing to grind, doing all the right things. It was nice to see it pay off for him.”
The usual suspects for the Huskies took charge in Friday's match, led by 17 kills from João Cunha. The trio of Rafael Parada, Athus Silva, and Brody Kopec also finished with double-digit kills in the contest. Noah Gagné secured 50 assists from the setter position while also leading the team with 10 digs, one ahead of teammate Anderson King.
Even after the Kodiaks won a thrilling first set, the Huskies worked efficiently to flip the game around into their favour.
That momentum led into Saturday’s win in Calgary. Twelve kills from Kopec led the way while Cunha had 11 to his credit. Nikola Sreckovic posted 21 assists, and King led his side with 10 digs.
After Gagne’s work on Friday, Kuhr opted to insert the fifth year Sreckovic into the lineup for the second time this season, hoping to keep both setters fresh in the long run.
“Nikola’s been with us for a while and he’s in his last year so we’re just trying to find him games to get out there and continue to help us win.
“He was able to set a really good game on the Saturday.”
The Huskies will now enter the bye week at 6-1 before hosting their two final games of the first semester. They play host to the Briercrest Clippers and Medicine Hat College Rattlers on November 28 and 30.
First serve for both gamedays begins with the Women’s game at 6:00pm with the Men’s game following right after.
