Women's Basketball Huskies extend win streak to nine in sweep of Vikings
A pair of wins on the road against the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings kept the Keyano Huskies Women’s Basketball rolling as they extended their winning streak to nine games.
“It was quite the grind, but I think it was a good playoff starter for us,” Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance said. “We learned a lot of lessons this weekend.”
Kaylynn Tucker guided Friday’s 63-56 win with a monster 33-point performance that marked a new single-game high in her ACAC career. Tucker was joined in the double-digit club by a 12-point performance by Danika Cadieux and 10 points by Jaylynn Twin.
The match was tight throughout though, with the Huskies shooting 61.7% from the field in the second quarter to take a two-point lead into the half. While the Vikings pressed for a home win, the Huskies never relinquished the lead, remaining tied or always a bucket or two ahead.
Tucker capped off her night with seven of the Huskies’ 16 points in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
“I love it when the games are close and we have the ability to fight through our adversity and win close games,” Vigilance added as his club moved to 8-2 for the season on the road. “I think they’re very beneficial for us moving forward.”
Saturday, Tucker led the offensive charge again with 15 points while Emma Tomchuk and Alexis Kemp factored into the final with double-digit performances. Even with brief opportunities for free throws Saturday, the Huskies made good on six-of-seven opportunities, in the 56-50 win.
The wins set the stage for a final home weekend against The King’s University Eagles. Both teams have risen to the top of the North Division with the weekend’s games officially locking in the teams to first or second.
“It’s all about getting ready for the playoffs, whether we win or lose it prepares us,” Vigilance added. “Two strong games against a very good opponent and I think no matter win or lose, it’s going to get us ready.”
The Huskies and Eagles tip-off on Friday, February 14 at 6:00pm with the rematch taking place on Saturday, February 15 at 1:00pm.
