Women's Basketball Huskies close out season in sixth place
The Keyano Huskies Women’s Basketball team saw their 2024-25 season come to a close with a 65-56 loss Sunday at the 2025 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball Championship, but have promising signs for the future.
“We didn’t get the result that we wanted, but the girls worked really hard and it shows our future is going to be really bright,” Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance said.
Relying in part by playing three rookies at some points during the weekend, the Huskies impressed in the first half, leading 32-26, but the host Ooks took back control of the game in the second half, with a 25-10 third quarter being the difference.
“[They brought] a lot of energy, they worked truly hard, they hit some shots,” Vigilance continued. “We were down by like 11 or 12 when I put them in and they closed the gap to about six or seven.”
Danika Cadieux led the way for another day, dropping 19 points on the strength of a pair of three-point shots and 44.4% shooting from the field. Emma Tomchuk joined Cadieux in the double-digit club for the day with 10 points, going a perfect five-for-five on free throws.
The Huskies as a team were dialed in on free throws, making 10 of 11(90.9%) throughout the day.
The sixth-place finish matches the team’s 2022-23 finish and roughly the same position for their 2021-22 and 2023-24 finishes. With that being said, the year was also a youth movement for the program with plenty of young talent coming into the program who will look to breakthrough to that top-four positioning in years to come.
“I definitely thought we’d at least be in the semi-final and playing for the Bronze medal, but sometimes that’s the way it goes and that’s sport,” Vigilance said of his projection for the season at the beginning versus the end. “I think our future is very bright.”
Cadieux named to Tournament All-Star Team
The Huskies season ended on a plus with the selection of Danika Cadieux to the Tournament All-Star Team.
Ranking fourth among all student-athletes at the tournament with 17.7 points per game, Cadieux led the Huskies in scoring while also adding 16 rebounds, five steals, and two assists.
“For her in her second year, named a tournament all-star, coming off a great year last year and now just finishing up her second year,” Vigilance commented of the second year from Bezanson, Alta. “[There’s] amazing things for her in the future.”
