Women's Futsal Huskies close out regular season second in the North; take next step towards Championships
Although they’ve qualified for the 2025 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Futsal Championship next month, the Keyano Huskies Women’s Futsal team know there’s plenty room for improvement as they set their sights on a return to the podium.
A 6-2-2 record greeted the Women’s program at the end of the regular season Sunday, placing them second in the ACAC’s North Division, but just one point ahead of the third-place Lakeland Rustlers.
“We had great moments during the past weekend, but we know we can be a much better team,” Head Coach Luiz Pedro Guimaraes said. “Consistency is key, and we can’t afford to have lapses during games if we want to win it all.
“Moving forward, we need to maintain our focus and execution from start to finish.”
After opening their weekend with a 3-0 win against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves, the Huskies drew 2-2 with the Lakeland Rustlers to close out Friday’s action. Saturday’s action featured their only loss of the weekend, a 2-0 result in favour of the NAIT Ooks, before they drew 2-2 with the Eagles from The King’s University. The Huskies wrapped up regular season play Sunday with a 9-0 win against the Portage College Voyageurs.
“Transitioning on both ends will be crucial for us in the championship,” Guimaraes added. “We need to be sharper, more disciplined, and fully committed to playing at a high tempo.”
A 2-1-2 weekend is a positive result, but after a 4-1-0 weekend in January, the Huskies know they’re capable of more as they begin their next stretch before heading off to Lloydminster, Sask. for conference championships. They’ll also face increased competition from the South Division’s best teams in their pursuit of stepping onto the ACAC Futsal podium for a third-straight season.
Nine found the back of the net in the weekend’s results, led by seven goals from Marissa Mestre.
"She had a fantastic weekend, and her ability to finish was a big asset for us,” Guimaraes said. “We have a lot of talented players on this team, If we can get more players involved in both creating and finishing opportunities, we’ll be a much more dangerous team.
“Offensive balance will be key as we head into the championship.”
The Huskies will now have a two-week break from competition before travelling to Lloydminster, Sask. for the 2025 ACAC Women’s Futsal Championship, hosted by Lakeland College.
