Women's Soccer Huskies earn four points from trek to Grande Prairie, on cusp of playoff spot
It wasn’t quite the finished they had imagined, but the Keyano Huskies Women’s Soccer team took two good steps towards qualifying for 2025 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Soccer Championship on the weekend in Grande Prairie, Alta.
With a 4-0 win and a 4-4 draw, the Huskies earned four points against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves that put them four points ahead of the Wolves in the standings with two games to go.
“The girls did well,” noted Head Coach Niels Slotboom. “The first game was definitely the better out of the two where we were better defensively and we dropped some of that in the second game.
“Overall, a pretty good four points; NWP has definitely improved a lot since last year and has got some very good players. Definitely some challenges, but overall good results to get out of there with four points all things considered.”
Saturday, first-half goals from Marissa Mestre and Nathalie Andersson put the Huskies ahead before the pair scored again in the second half. Wanyi McLennan-Dillabough stopped all five shots faced for their third shutout of the season.
Sunday, a wild eight-goal game saw each team leave with a point. After Andersson scored the Huskies’ lone goal of the half to tie things up, the two teams combined for six goals between the 51st and 80th minutes of play.
Mestre added her third goal of the weekend in the match while Addyson McLean scored twice.
“Addy did really well,” Slotboom said. “She’s slowly starting to understand that offensive side of her game. She’s always played as a fullback and more in the defensive side, which she’s been very good at.
“We’ve really been trying to push the in-possession part of her game and she’s responding really well. This weekend she got some goals out of it due to being in the right spot at the right time so it’s been great.”
The Huskies need two points to officially clinch a playoff spot, which they’ll have a chance at this weekend at home. The Huskies host the Lakeland Rustlers for the final games of the 2025 regular season. Kick-off is at 1:30pm Saturday and 12:00pm Sunday.
