Black History Month: Rami Ghanem, Men's Basketball
During Black History Month, Keyano College Huskies Athletics will be celebrating and recognizing the accomplishments of Black student-athletes and staff who have made an impact during their time at Keyano College. Today, the program is recognizing Men’s Basketball student-athlete Rami Ghanem.

During his two seasons with the Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team, Rami Ghanem made an incredible impact.
Joining the Huskies for the 2015-16 season, Ghanem and the Huskies faced increased expectations as hosts for the 2016 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) Men’s Basketball National Championship.
In his first season with the team, he played in 15 of the team’s 24 regular season games, averaging 10.8 points per game. He also added 35 assists, 28 rebounds, and 19 steals as the Huskies finished atop the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference’s (ACAC) North Division with a 19-5 record.
Beating the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings for Bronze Medal to culminate the ACAC Men’s Basketball Championships in 2016, Ghanem totalled 38 points throughout the three games, making the second-most field goals and free throws on his team during the tournament. He also added 10 assists, five rebounds, and five steals during the three games.
While the 2016-17 season brought change for the Huskies, Ghanem stepped up as a leader for the program, leading them with 407 points while appearing in all 24 games for a 17.0 points per game average. Leading the team in scoring, he placed second on the team in rebounds with 131, also adding 55 assists, 38 steals, and five blocks.
In a season where the Huskies scored 1,781 points, Ghanem accounted for 22.85 percent of the team’s direct offence. That put him close to a performance from one of the program’s other greats, Zach Waldher, who scored 26.98 percent of the team’s offence in 2011-12. At the time he became the second-ever Men's Basketball student-athlete to surpass the 400-point mark in a single season with Sean-Michael Clancey joining him in the 2022-23 campaign.
The ACAC also recognized him with a spot on the ACAC’s All-Conference Second Team for his efforts as he finished fourth in divisional scoring, seventh in conference scoring, also finishing in the top 10 for rebounding, assists, and steals in the division.
Since leaving the Huskies, Ghanem has gone on to a professional basketball career that has seen him play in his home country of Sweden in their Basketligan among other countries.
While you won’t find his name on the shortlist of all-time leaders in the conference’s history, what Ghanem accomplished in two years with the Huskies and beyond in professional basketball is more than worthy of note.
