Rodney, Ly named Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week
Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women's Soccer student athlete Felicia Rodney (Calgary, Alta.) and Men's Soccer student athlete William Ly (Montreal, Que.) have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 9, 2022.
Rodney recorded five goals and two assists to play a leading role in the Keyano Huskies Women's Soccer team earning six points over the weekend as they defeated the Lakeland Rustlers twice.
"She's easy to play with for every player so she's smart enough and plenty capable enough to fit into different systems," Women's Soccer Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. "As we get into this last little bit of games, we start to see the chemistry with other players and that's making her even more effective, and it also makes other players on our team shine."
In Saturday's 5-2 victory, she scored her team's second goal in the ninth minute and later assisted on the team's fifth goal in the 79th minute. Sunday, she scored her team's third, fourth, fifth, and sixth goals between the 35th and 89th minutes to cement the 6-0 victory. She also assisted on the Huskies' opening goal of the game.
As part of a record-setting weekend for the Huskies, Rodney established a new single-season scoring record for the program and became the third-ever Women's Soccer student-athlete in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) history to score 50 career regular season goals.
Rodney's 13 goals currently rank third in the entire ACAC and lead the North Division. Her eight assists rank her second in the conference this season. She's the first-ever Women's Soccer student-athlete at Keyano College to score double-digit goals in a single outdoor season.
"The records are all just confirmation of what she's been doing since she's entered into the league quite a few years ago and has been at the top of it ever since," Slotboom added.
A product of Calgary, Alta., Rodney is in her fourth year of eligibility and is currently studying Social Work.
On the men's side Ly scored the team's lone goal of the weekend and was named the Player of the Game in Saturday's match.
After earning Player of the Game honours in a 4-0 loss Saturday, Ly scored in the 22nd minute of Sunday's 1-1 draw with the Lakeland Rustlers.
"He did really well in a game where we struggled on Saturday," Men's Soccer Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. "He stood out and did more than just his part in the game. He was constantly dangerous and involved in the play.
"Sunday, he got rewarded with a great goal and another full performance from him in both games this weekend."
It marked the second goal of the season for the rookie and his first on the road.
The Huskies return to action this coming weekend when they play their final home games of the 2022 ACAC Regular Season, hosting the NAIT Ooks at Shell Place. The Huskies and Ooks battle at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday followed by 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. matches Sunday as the Huskies celebrate their graduating seniors.
